Here is a funny little story about John Bickmore Kidd:

John occasionally thought he had too much to do to keep up in Church. One time, when a deep snow kept John from going the few miles to town — where he could get paper & tobacco. He rolled his own. Well, he had tobacco enough, so he tried newspaper. Awful. A magazine. Doesn’t burn right. The paper needed to be thin. John was inventive; he knew a book that had that type of paper. It was in its place. But could he do it? Well, a smoker thinks he has to, so he dared. He reasoned, “This book isn’t really used that often, anyway.” He used one page at a time, so you wouldn’t notice. When he could get to town, a large section of the book was missing. But this paper was so good that he kept using it until there was only the cover left. Sometime later, Annah overheard him telling a neighbor of this experience. She was sure John was a good man. She exclaimed, “Ah, John, you did no such thing!” Kindly but positively, John affirmed, “Yes I did, Girlie! Yes, I did! I smoked up the Bible!”
